秦朝末年，楚地有一个叫季布的人，性情耿直，为人侠义好助只要是他答应过的事情，无论有多大困难他都设法办到，受到大家的赞扬季布的同乡人曹丘，专爱结交有权势的官员，借以炫耀和抬高自己，季布一向看不起他听说季布做了大官曹丘马上去见季布。

季布听说曹丘要来，就虎着脸，准备发落几句话，让他下不了台谁知曹丘一进厅堂，不管季布的脸色多么阴沉，话语多么难听，对着季布又是打躬，又是作揖，还与季布拉家常叙旧，并吹捧说："我听到楚地到处流传着得黄金千两，不如得季布一诺这样的话，您怎么有这样的好名声传扬在梁、楚两地的呢？我们既是同乡，我又到处宣扬你的好名声，你为什么不愿见到我呢？"。

季布听了曹丘的这番话，认为他的名声之所以这么大，原来与曹丘的宣传有关，心里顿时高兴起来，于是留下他住了几不月，作为贵客招待后来，人们把这个故事概括为"一诺千金"A promise that will be kept。
