没错，就是maintain动词Maintain 由两部分组成1. 词缀main意思是“居住，留”Remain = re 往后 + main 留 = 停留2. 词根tain意思是“握，持有”Obtain：ob 加强语气+ tain 持有 = （通过努力）获得。

Attain：at 加强语气（加在同辅音字母的词根前） + tain 持有= 实现，得到Contain：con 共同 + tain 持有 = 包含，容纳所以，maintain就是“留着握有某个东西”，即

这样的话，if 引导的就是条件状语从句，而且是虚拟语气，后面donate/ require都用了过去时态，说明作者认为他的假设基本不可能实现理解了这些，我们再加上 the only way，强调“唯一的办法”，就变成了文中的原句。
